Convergence effects in Spanish-English bilingual rhythm

چکیده

This study examines the rhythmic properties of highly proficient Spanish-English bilinguals. Ten Spanish-English bilinguals who live in the United States read aloud sentences in Spanish (their L1) and English (their L2), and ten Spanish and ten English monolingual control speakers read aloud sentences in their respective native languages. We performed an acoustic analysis of vocalic and consonantal durations and applied four timing metrics with the intent of measuring rhythmic variability across groups. We used two Pairwise Variability Index (PVI) metrics (nPVI-V and rPVI-C) and two variation coefficient (Varco) metrics (VarcoV and VarcoC). Results show that the Spanish and English monolingual control groups pattern as expected for syllableand stresstimed languages, respectively. The bilingual speakers show separate statistical distributions in their L1 and L2 rhythms, implying that they produce separate rhythms in their two languages. Further analysis revealed that the bilingual speakers were consistently English-like in English (their L2) but were not consistently Spanish-like in Spanish (their L1). These data support the notion that extensive exposure to an L2 facilitates development toward native-like command of L2 rhythmic patterns, and that this can further lead to L2-to-L1 convergence effects.

Phonological skills in predominantly English-speaking, predominantly Spanish-speaking, and Spanish-English bilingual children.

PURPOSE There is a paucity of information detailing the phonological skills of Spanish-English bilingual children and comparing that information to information concerning the phonological skills of predominantly English-speaking (PE) and predominantly Spanish-speaking (PS) children. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between amount of output (i.e., percentage of time each...

Measures of speech rhythm and the role of corpus-based word frequency: a multifactorial comparison of Spanish(-English) speakers

In this study, we address various measures that have been employed to distinguish between syllable and stresstimed languages. This study differs from all previous ones by (i) exploring and comparing multiple metrics within a quantitative and multifactorial perspective and by (ii) also documenting the impact of corpus-based word frequency. We begin with the basic distinctions of speech rhythms, ...

Linguistic Characteristics of the Stuttered Word in a Bilingual Spanish-english Speaking Child

The purpose of this study was to increase our understanding of the stuttering in bilingual children. Specifically, the linguistic features of the stuttered word in the spontaneous speech of a bilingual Spanish-English child (chronological age 2;7) were examined and compared to what is observed in monolingual Spanish and English speaking children who stutter. Digital video recordings of the part...

Los Cinco Grandes across cultures and ethnic groups: multitrait multimethod analyses of the Big Five in Spanish and English.

Spanish-language measures of the Big Five personality dimensions are needed for research on Hispanic minority populations. Three studies were conducted to evaluate a Spanish version of the Big Five Inventory (BFI) (O. P.
